Coelacanth..and different vanishings | Fragrance Posse

Again within the Jurassic Period(2001), after I was continuously bombarded with PEOPLE & STUFF (born of individuals) and I might go house to EVEN MORE STUFF (and folks) the factor I most longed for was… quiet.  And it all the time made me really feel gaboozlely as a result of I used to be certain I used to be only a fiend for not desirous to be round PEOPLE & STUFF 24/7 (okay, principally by no means, if I’m being trustworthy)…

…after which I got here throughout this glorious Ernie Pook comeek, by Lynda Barry, titled ‘Coelacanth’

Lynda Barry, sweatergawd.

This little gem .. it was as if Lynda Barry had written is Simply For Me.  My complete life in an offended family, spent chasing peace and quiet, the epitome of my need discovered within the pages of The Chicago Reader.  I reduce it out, saved it… then.. poof!  Vanished.  Couldn’t discover it.

No worries, proper?  I’ll simply go on the great ol’ World Vast Net – EVERYTHING! is on the World Vast Net.

Besides this one comedian.  Years of looking, at the same time as Goog attained World Domination, gathering all intel from all around the globe… nonetheless no Comeek.  I knew I’d stashed it someplace – I couldn’t have imagined it (not that many frames – simply not potential…proper?) … so a few 12 months in the past, when issues had settled right down to a boring roar, I made a decision to consider the place I would’ve put it (20+ years in the past) and go on the hunt.

And..on a hunch I quieted my thoughts, then received a… ‘perhaps’….seemed in That One Place I hadn’t seemed and vi-ola!  I discovered it!  Tucked behind the again of an outdated Filofax (bear in mind these? I’ve stored all of them!  In all probability time for a Swedish Dying Cleanse) it was nonetheless as Completely Me as ever – however extra vital, the discovering of it confirmed that I hadn’t misplaced my thoughts and made that complete comeek up.  As a result of, guess what?  I STILL can’t discover it on the DubyaDubyaDubya.  (insert shrug emoji).

It received me interested by different issues in Life which have vanished:  Christmas in July dusting powder – my mom had a field of this on the pink rest room tank in our lavatory and whereas I couldn’t let you know what it smelled like (this screenshot, from a 1948 advert, says it’s ‘green-cool’.  Alrighty then.  Early Gooble searches got here up with purple tins – NEWP!  I remembered it as a spherical white field with pastel stars…and I used to be about to signal myself right into a’facility’ as a result of….till the Fleabay vendor Mirluck put 1948 Christmas in July cologne dusting powder woman swimming vintage ad | eBay up for bid.  Thanks, Floyd (and Mirluck) – tis PERSACKLY as I remembered it!

Thanks Mirluck!

Y’all bear in mind The Hunt for Ondine? A fairly-but-forgettable (imo) fragrance by Suzanne Thierry, for some motive it was the show at Marshall Area’s in Oakbrook that stayed in my thoughts, all cool white flowers atop a spherical desk on the entrance to the sweetness division.  I’ve smelled Ondine since – and it’s nonetheless fairly – however nothing can ever replicate my delight at seeing that show.

My first bottle of Je Reviens by Value, worn as a teen.  I don’t even know what I might be trying to find – my misplaced youth, maybe?  It was a buttery, massive white floral – and it was the title of Rebecca de Winter’s boat, the one by which she allegedly drowned when it sank (no spoiler: learn the guide. Or watch the superb movie).  I all the time felt bizarre that I needed to be Rebecca as a result of Good Catholic Ladies have been speculated to wish to be The Second Mrs DeWinter. Squoo that.  Rebecca was FABULOUS! imperious, impetuous, amoral, corrupt…Max might have hated her – however hate is incendiary…and takes no prisoners.  Actually beats a tepid affection – not less than it does in fiction.  As beautiful because the Value fragrance is, it was not Rebecca’s – hers would’ve been Mitsouko.  And she or he was by no means forgotten. Make mine Rebecca.
